Nyangatom Headrest 02This headrest comes from Kenya, hand carved from one piece of indigenous wood. Headrests were a necessity for the North Western nomadic pastoral tribes of Kenya as they have a cultural custom of wearing elaborate coiffures which the headrests helped to preserve whilst sleeping amongst other benefits of protecting against dust and insects. They are considered to be one of the most important of their few possessions that they travelled with. The
vintage wooden bowls from global communities are increasingly rare to curate and would have been used to prepare and serve food or used for storage for many years
Helmet masks are hand-carved from ingenious wood and finished with brass details
The headrest is thought to hold spiritual powers and invoke dreams
acting as a resting place for the spirits and as a form of communication
